People’s Light

A civic and cultural institution in Chester County for a quarter of a century, People’s Light operates as a literal and figurative theater where performances as well as special events are held.  When undertaking a renovation of its ballroom, the theater engaged with us to re-envision its outdoor space.  

Given tight parameters when it came to budget and timing, we sought to maximize the existing outdoor space, making it an extension of indoor performances as well as a stage for life celebrations of the community.  To that end, we created functionality in under-utilized spaces, such as establishing a firepit and storytelling area in the driveway circle.  A stone and timber arbor were fashioned to create continuity with the existing architecture and gardens and to serve as a threshold for weddings and outdoor events.  We also installed a white-themed garden for wedding photography and other ceremonies. Abutted on one side by a busy road, the restaurant and patio space were insulated with a custom-designed panel and louver fence, which quelled the noise while allowing light to infiltrate.  Providing master planning, permit and construction documents, we re-envisioned People’s Light from a traditional theater to a performance space for professionals and celebrants alike.
