In a neighborhood of center-hall and vernacular styles, this mid-century modern home represented an amazing opportunity for my team to marry form and function. Echoing the rectangular lines of the house, we set about creating garden spaces of evergreen hedges, trimmed shrubs and groundcover that were easily-maintained by the homeowners. A rectilinear espalier was mounted on the front of the house to hide retrofit HVAC ductwork and underscore the architectural style. The low-maintenance gardens and new horticultural features were designed to complement the home and its distinctive geometric aesthetic.
Faced with a problematic circular driveway that made maneuvering cars difficult and resulted in a disorganized appearance when there were guests, we realigned the drive and created pull-in bays. The result increased the sense of order and reduced the total paved surface on the property. Similarly, we solved for a lack of continuity between the backyard and house by installing walkways, a water feature, and patio all in the same natural stone as the home. Finally, there were drainage issues which resulted in washed-out mulch beds, ever-present puddles and wet sections of lawn. To address these, we directed roof water to a subterranean infiltration bed and managed surface run-off through strategically placed plant beds and lawn spaces. My team’s efforts to solve traffic and drainage issues resulted in a quintessential mid-century house flanked by gardens and hardscape echoing its architectural style with orderly parking and low-maintenance vegetation.
