Wilmington Contemporary

Seeking visual interest and privacy in a Wilmington subdivision, the homeowners of this Prairie-inspired residence engaged us to redesign their landscaping with the intent of creating a singular experience.  Inspired by and wishing to complement the Prairie and craftsman aesthetic of the house, my team and I strategically employed natural boulders and cut stone in practical and ornamental ways.

The cut-stone walkway recalls an Asian plank bridge, floating above a stream of ferns and low-growing perennials.  We then positioned natural boulders to draw attention from the street to the path and then onto the front door.  The repeated plantings of shrubs and groundcover create rhythm and interest.  These clean sweeps of native and native-inspired selections of flowering and grassy perennials direct the gaze to the house and various destinations in the garden.  Through the use of granite slabs and natural stone as well as specific vegetation, we managed to create a unique experience in a subdivision of tract homes.  The landscaping underscores the architectural nods to the Prairie and craftsman styles, setting this home apart and making it a showpiece among its neighbors.
