Maffei Landscape Design leverages the power of 3D CAD software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for all of its projects regardless of size for a wide variety of purposes throughout the design process. While the site inventory and analysis phase of the design process may be less glamorous than others, it is a vital step that identifies critical spatial and programmatic information. Firm founder and principal Danilo Maffei, FAPLD, PCH is an industry leader in the use of 3D CAD/BIM software and recently wrote an article for the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association (NJLCA)
The essence of BIM is the creation of models and digital objects with data associated that can be used to inform both designer, client and contractors during key decision-making points during the design and construction processes, with an infinite possibilities for data reporting and graphic display. The designer may use the information to validate and pre-visualize various possible solutions, while the client may use it to better understand how those solutions might fit their vision for the work and their budget. Contractors benefit from robust reporting in the form of product schedules and detailed drawings.

When the property was purchased by the current owner, the buildings and grounds were suffering from deferred maintenance, but nearly all of the architectural elements were intact. The original gardens themselves had all but vanished and a new, naturalistic vision emerged in synergy between the owner and designer, Danilo Maffei.
The rejuvenated garden features flowering perennials and ornamental grasses intended to be at their peak in late summer and fall. Asters, goldenrod and tickseed (Coreopsis sp.) do the heavy lifting for seasonal color, while a golden haze of Skyracer purple moor grass (Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea ‘Skyracer’) gently drift back and forth in the slightest breeze. With a backdrop of the 19th century stone barn and serpentine brick courtyard walls, the garden evolves in its display as the seasons change. More images of this garden and others on the property may be found here.
