The owners of this original 1800s Chester County farmhouse approached us to design a modern outdoor living space. Tasked with tying the historic home to the swimming pool and hot tub in a coherent way, my team created a holistic feeling through the strategic use of native materials and retaining walls.
Working within the confines of existing mature trees and fence lines, we engaged the natural slope of the land to layer gravel patios connected by rough-hewn stone slab steps. The backbone of stairs and landings link the house to the pool and spa for seamless circulation. And the mix of the gravel with the stone of the steps and low walls echo the natural surroundings as well as architectural details of the home.
Early on, the homeowners identified gardening as a primary hobby and stressed their desire for experimental plantings. With this in mind, we installed pockets of perennials that would yield color and interest season after season. Add in a hot tub, firepit, Adirondack chairs, and outdoor shower suspended from a tree, and there’s a great place to entertain friends and family or just relax and recharge alone. With this classic Chester County farmhouse, we were able to create continuity and flow from the home to the pool, sitting area, and hot tub. Tying the different levels together with common materials, we melded a historic residence to modern recreational sites.
