After the homeowners transformed a typical 1970s ranch home into a Palm Springs-inspired minimalist retreat, we were called upon to create hardscape and grounds to complement the California vibe. Central to our design was the classic So Cal concept that there is no real distinction between outdoor and indoor spaces.
With the extension of the living area as a priority, we converted a carport into a semi-covered patio. Suddenly, the front of the house that before only yielded a visual impression now provided opportunities for dining, entertaining, and relaxing in the shade. From there, we turned our attention to updating the pool and deck in the rear of the house. To create clean lines that echo the mid-century feel, we removed an outside central staircase and simplified the levels. As the land naturally slopes downward, we located the whirlpool on the ground floor and had it cascade down to the pool on the level below.
Collaborating with the builder, we weighed in on material selections for the deck, railing, and stairs of the house. Further, we worked together to hide the pool equipment and ensure that pool-related activity could be supported easily with changing areas and showers located just inside. With this mid-century modern, we maximized the outdoor living space, simplified the flow of pool-goers, echoed the architectural feel of the home, and blurred the line between interior and exterior spheres.
